Solar power is not just a possibility, but could be a necessity for those that go remote. Solar panels are used to collect solar energy for direct use or storage in batteries to power up later.

"The solar cells that you see on calculators and satellites are photovoltaic cells or modules (modules are simply a group of cells electrically connected and packaged in one frame). Photovoltaics, as the word implies (photo = light, voltaic = electricity), convert sunlight directly into electricity. Once used almost exclusively in space, photovoltaics are used more and more in less exotic ways. They could even power your house. How do these devices work?

Photovoltaic (PV) cells are made of special materials called semiconductors such as silicon, which is currently the most commonly used. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a certain portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. It is amazing what is already available and out in the marketplace for solar power options. You may not consider the Notepower as a true solar docking station, but it is an attractive portable solar package for a temporary power solution. Originally priced around $250.00.

Commercial and Military Grade Solar Power Systems

Some of the best remote solar power systems are designed to meet military standards. You could even say that anything designed for military use is pretty much guaranteed to perform. These systems will compliment anything in the fully rugged notebook computer category.

A Notebook or commonly referred to as a laptop computer is a smaller version of the desktop computer. But its advantages are that all of its components it comes in one neat mobile notebook shaped digital display box, and is easily portable. It usually weighs around 2 to 17 pounds (1 to 8 kgs) depending on the make, materials and different other factors that come into play such as the parent company etc.

Notebooks run on a singular battery from (usually) an external AC/DC adapter. It charges the battery and in the meanwhile supplies power to the laptop too. Numerous `notebooks` have a 3 volt back-up cell to supply power during power failures and when in places where there is no steady power supply. Notebooks, as personal computers are worthy and capable of doing the same work as of desktop computers. But they are less powerful than their desktop counterparts at the same price. This is because of the fact that most parts used in desktop computers are miniaturized to fit into the slim notebook version of the machine.

Notebooks usually have LCD (liquid crystal displays) and they use separate memory modules for their RAM. Notebooks usually have a touchpad (or trackpad) for a mouse and an in-built keyboard. But external installments of these can also be attached if the user wants to do so.

The first commercially available laptop (the name notebook was not feasible at that time as they were much bigger than the versions available now) was the Osborne I in 1981. Though it was much heavier and had only a tiny CRT monitor, yet it had a revolutionary effect on the business and industrial sectors. The idea of taking back work to home was given a full new meaning. A better installment of the laptop or the `notebook` came in 1983. Compaq Portable was the first tech-product of Compaq and was a notebook version of the then hugely popular IBM Personal Computer. It became a hit as it was more IBM-compatible than portable from its predecessors!

But the first notebook was arguably the GRiD Compass 1101, released in 1982 by Bill Moggridge. The `clamshell` design, or the `notebook` design, where the LCD monitor remains shut against the keypad, was introduced. It was enclosed in a magnesium case, and could run on batteries. The first commercially successful notebooks were from the SupersPort series from Zenith Data Systems (ZDS), which competed with several other companies such as IBM, Toshiba, Compaq and others to notch up a deal with the U.S. Air Force for a contract of supplying 200,000 notebooks in 1987. This made the laptop popular and penetrative to the business and affordable price ranges to the common consumers.

Even though the notebook might seem a powerful and mobile genius of this age, it has its fallacies too. The major ones may be listed below.

Standardizing and weaker parts:

Parts of the notebook are miniaturized parts of desktop computers themselves and hence are weaker in comparison. The miniaturization process also takes a toll on the prices of the notebooks, which are generally higher priced than their desktop counterparts. Also, notebooks count a lot on steady power supply, even though supposed to be mobile, for a decent performance. Though, today technology has improved this negative facet of notebooks.

Durability Issues:

The portability, make, integrated composite structure and design of the notebooks make them more liable to shock, wear and physical damage than desktop computers. And the worst part is that the purchase value of a new LCD screen or motherboard, if damaged, is more than the whole purchasing value of the notebook itself!

Performance Issues:

Desktop computers are generally high performing machines when compared to notebooks of the same price range. This even though is being abolished slowly by improving cutting edge technology, this will not hold true. As energy and portability are prioritized goals for a notebook than absolute performance.

All in all, notebooks are the rage of the new generation today. And slowly but surely, the era of desktop computers is fading into oblivion.

Using a Digital Multimeter

A digital multimeter is one the most versatile and useful instruments in your auto shop. It is important to own a good model and understand how to use it properly. A digital multimeter is actually three devices in one. It is a voltmeter that measure electrical potential across a device in volts. It is an ammeter that measures the amount of electric current through a device. This is measured in amps. Finally, a digital multimeter is an ohmmeter that measures electrical resistance of a device. Electrical resistance is measured in ohms.

Today, modern digital multimeters are designed to be rugged and easy to operate. A good multimeter will have a rugged plastic case and large, easy to use selector knobs. The top part contains the digital read out screen. This is something you should thoroughly check out before you purchase one. Make sure the screen is large enough to read it and make sure you see the readout in sunlight. Chances are you will be using this instrument outside in direct sunlight.

Below the digital readout is a large knob called the function switch. The function switch allows you to change the modes the digital multimeter operates in. For example, you can easily change from voltmeter to ammeter to ohmmeter with the turn of the dial. Again make sure the function switch is large and easy to operate. Most function switches have approximately eight positions. Most have three V markings that measure voltage. They measure AC, DC and low voltage currents in the millivolt range. Next there will be two positions marked with A~ and A=. The A~ measures AC current in amps and the A= measures DC current in amps. The upside down horseshoe Ω measures resistance in ohms.

In order to measure voltage, first turn on the digital multimeter and let it go through its startup procedure. Generally the digital readout lights up and the unit goes through its self diagnostic checkout. Once that is completed you are ready to measure volts. Now turn the function switch to V= to measure DC volts. Now you will need to connect the red and black leads to the digital multimeter. Connect the red lead to the red input terminal labeled VΩ and connect the black lead to the terminal labeled COM for common terminal. Now you can measure volts by putting the red lead on the terminal with the higher potential and the black lead on the lower one.

To measure amps, the leads must be connected in a different fashion. First set the function switch to A= position. Connect the black lead to the COM terminal. Now you must connect the red lead to the terminal labeled 300mA. Now you are ready to connect the meter in series the device being measured by opening up the circuit and inserting the meter between the open points. The results will be in milliamps because you are using the 300mA terminal.

The third feature of a digital multimeter is its ability to measure to Ohms. Ohms is a measurement of resistance in an electrical circuit. First disconnect all wiring and power sources from the device being measured. Now turn the function switch to the Ω position and connect your leads. The red lead is connected to the terminal labeled VΩ and the black terminal connects to the COM terminal. The display will indicate OL. This is normal and means there is an overload. Now connect the leads across the device to measure the Ohms.

These are the basic functions of a digital multimeter. Remember to shut off your multimeter before storing it back in the your toolbox. You do not want a drained battery the next time you will need it. There are several good brands on the market today. Fluke digital multimeters are probably the most popular and you won’t go wrong with one.

Metaphysics has a rich history in Native American and many ancient Eastern cultures, and is becoming an increasingly popular academic discipline in the United States. Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that examines the fundamental nature of all reality, both visible and invisible. It is basic and simple, yet includes all that exists; therefore, it applies to everything divine, human, or other. Metaphysics is a science that seeks to unite man's physical, mental, and spiritual nature into the whole of its parts.

Metaphysics derives its name and meaning from two Greek words:

Meta - behind, beyond, transcending, or encompassing; moving toward change or transformation; higher, more developed. Physics - study of physical forces and qualities: the scientific study of matter, energy, force, and motion, and the way they relate to each other. Physics traditionally incorporates mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, and thermodynamics and now includes modern disciplines such as quantum mechanics, relativity, and nuclear physics.

In his works on natural science, the Greek philosopher and scientist, Aristotle, (384-322 BC) presented thoughts on astronomy, meteorology, plants, and animals. His writing about the nature of existence, First Philosophy, was later titled Metaphysics. This work deals with what he calls the knowledge of first causes, or Divine knowledge (for God is thought to be among the causes of all things and to be a first principle), which he believed one had to acquire before a scientific answer could be reached. However, the Chinese, Native American Indians, Hindus, Buddhists, and many other cultures have long known about and practiced a method of Metaphysics in their spiritual and healing practices.

Knowledge for Metaphysics is gathered by rational (scientific) thought or mystical (intuitive) understanding and therefore gathers a wide range of people into its study. To call one a metaphysician in this traditional, philosophical sense indicates nothing more than a person s interest in attempting to discover what underlies everything. A psychology that merges science and spirituality has developed through metaphysics. Teachers, philosophers, doctors, and ministers utilize metaphysics in dealing with emotional and physical problems, especially with the sick and dying. Many times doctors and counselors who work in the field of Metaphysics are called spiritual healers, mystics, or alternative medical practitioners. Although most utilize such skills as telepathy (the ability to read the mind of another person), clairvoyance (the ability to see spiritually), or clairaudience (the ability to hear spiritually), there are numerous Metaphysical methods of treatment commonly used in our society (see figures 1 & 2) to balance energy and allow the body to heal itself naturally.

In one case, there was a woman who had experienced severe depression all her life and who had manifested suicidal thoughts during times of crisis. She sought help from traditional counselors and medical doctors who prescribed an antidepressant medication. However, the medication only masked the problem by covering its symptoms. Even with medication, a low level of anxiety and brain fog (confusion and inability to remain focused) continued. Additionally, while on the antidepressants, her weight had increased by 20 percent. The weight gain lowered her self-esteem, but each time she attempted to discontinue or reduce her medication the suicidal thoughts would return and her mood disorder would worsen. After learning about metaphysical methods of treatment, she visited an energy therapist. The therapist found that the right and left hemispheres of her brain were disconnected from one another, that her mind was not connected to her brain (they are not the same thing), and that her throat chakra was spinning in the wrong direction. This was causing her fifth chakra to deflect any energy that was attempting to come to her pituitary, pineal, and adrenal glands, thus resulting in poor metabolism, hormone imbalance, and symptoms of depression. In addition to this, the therapist intuitively detected hidden fears coming from past events that were registering as trauma in the second and third chakras.

After clearing the detrimental energy from these areas, and turning and balancing the chakras, the patient began to return to her normal weight, her self-esteem improved, her fears lessened, and the symptoms of depression diminished. As energy treatment continued, the woman was able to safely discontinue all anti-depressant medication without experiencing the return of the mood disorder or suicidal thoughts.

There seems to be a proclivity among people who are awakening and embracing Metaphysics. Emotional walls and religious barriers are coming down as people who formerly held fast to one doctrine or dogma, are beginning to accept and affirm ancient belief systems. This hodgepodge faith is causing a change in lifestyle for many people. Those who never considered themselves a religious church goer are now finding comfort and healing through contact and communication with angels, spirit guides, ascended masters, and the Divine Mother/Father Creator. This is effecting how humans treat themselves, one another, animals, and the environment.

Fast food restaurants are slow in catching on to the desires of those who wish to eat more healthful, but there is hope that super-sized, fat-laden meals at the drive-thru window will be replaced with low-fat, high fiber meals of smaller proportions at the same price and convenience. This transition will be necessary and profitable for food vendors when more people catch on to the benefits of Metaphysics. People all over the globe are finding that we have a common thread -- the need for energy whether in the form of love, healing, connection, personal power, or acceptance. Energy is the source of all life. Prana or Chi (pronounced chee ) is the word used to describe the natural energy or life-force of the Universe. We know that the sun contains energy to warm the earth, and energy is contained in chemicals such as hydrogen -- imagine the power of an atom when split. Electrical energy is used to supply comfort to our homes. Food, when digested, is converted to energy for the human body. All humans produce and expend energy. Hostility toward those who deviate from societal norms was manifested in the horrible activities of the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the Holocaust. The degree to which we punish those with whom we do not agree may vary, but even today differing opinions regarding beliefs prevent peace efforts in many war-torn countries. While in the U.S. it is not an acceptable practice to kill someone for their faith, rejection and ridicule are typical responses toward those who embrace a controversial Metaphysical view of life. What a sad commentary it would be to say that we have landed on the moon, yet have not reached our own spirit.

More and more people are looking to non-conventional methods of healing that combine a natural or spiritual approach. An expansion programme, already commenced, will provide an additional 5600m2 of manufacturing and administration space.
As part of the increased manufacturing facilities, a short-run production line will be set up.

Phihong USA has developed a one-port midspan for high-power devices that is capable of powering 802.11n access points. Typical applications for the 30W midspan include wireless/WiMAX network access points, security cameras and IP telephones with streaming video. 'Along with the new standard, customers are looking for equipment that is interoperable across multiple vendor platforms', said Keith Hopwood, Vice President of Marketing for Phihong USA.

High output capacity, extensive options for local and remote control, compact construction and very competitive pricing are the major features of the new programmable 3U power supplies in the Genesys range from Lambda.
